Counsellors’ Journey

My experience with hardship and loss was the start of my journey to becoming a counsellor. I come from a working-class background where opportunities can seem limited and financial deprivation can impact confidence and self-esteem. I needed to secure a profession that would help me develop professionally, personally and would be rewarding. I began by enrolling onto a Certificate to Higher Education course in Counselling & Counselling Skills at Birbeck, University of London in 2011. Initially I wanted to learn more about myself, the perspective of others and why people think, feel, and behave in particular ways. Once I had competed Level 1 & Level 2 of the Certificate course, I knew that I wanted to become a qualified counsellor. In October 2013 I started my BSc (Hons) Counselling degree at The University of East London and graduated in 2016. It may be that my journey to becoming a counsellor started earlier than previously mentioned, as from an early age I was always curious about people so it would make sense that I would go into a profession that was focused on the human experience.
